Chokhmah — Wisdom, the Flash of Insight

The second sefirah, standing for the instant of insight that arrives whole and unexplained, before it has been unpacked into a reasoned idea.

Chokhmah is 'wisdom,' but in the specific sense of a flash rather than an accumulated body of knowledge — kabbalists associate it with the Hebrew letter yud, a single point with no extension, because that is exactly what a flash of insight is: a point, not yet a line of reasoning. It emerges directly from Keter's undirected will as the first content that could be called an 'idea,' though still too compressed to be communicated. Chokhmah cannot do anything on its own; it needs Binah, the very next sefirah, to receive that point and draw it out into something articulate. This pairing — sudden insight requiring patient elaboration — is why Chokhmah and Binah are traditionally called 'father' and 'mother,' with every subsequent sefirah understood as their offspring.
