Gematria — Letters as Numbers, Numbers as Meaning
A method of biblical interpretation that treats Hebrew letters as numbers, so that words and phrases with matching numerical totals are read as mystically connected.
Because Hebrew has no separate numeral system — every letter doubles as a number, aleph as 1, bet as 2, and so on — any word or phrase can be reduced to a single numerical value simply by summing its letters. Gematria uses this feature to find hidden relationships the plain text doesn't state outright: if two different words or phrases share the same total, tradition treats that shared number as evidence of a real conceptual link, not mere coincidence. The technique predates formal Kabbalah, appearing in rabbinic exegesis, but Kabbalists from the medieval period onward developed it far more extensively, treating it as a way to access the Sod, or hidden, layer of Torah alongside the letter-combination systems built on Sefer Yetzirah. A frequently cited example is the numerical equivalence between the Hebrew words for 'snake' (nachash) and 'messiah' (mashiach), which Kabbalists have used to argue that redemption and the very force that corrupted Eden are mystically entangled rather than simple opposites.
