The Righteous Sustain the World — Tzaddik Yesod Olam

A single line from Proverbs gets read by Kabbalah as identifying the righteous person with Yesod, the specific sefirah that channels all divine abundance into the physical world.

Proverbs 10:25 states plainly that "the righteous is an everlasting foundation," using the word yesod for foundation. Kabbalists take this as more than praise — Yesod is also the name of the ninth sefirah, the narrow channel through which the combined flow of the upper sefirot passes before reaching Malkhut, the sefirah of manifest reality. Identifying the tzaddik with Yesod means the righteous person is not simply admirable but functionally load-bearing: without a genuine channel of that kind operating somewhere in a generation, the argument goes, divine sustenance would have nowhere to pass through into the world. Hasidism later expanded this into its doctrine of the rebbe as a living conduit, but the structural claim — that righteousness is architecturally necessary, not just morally nice — is already fully present in the biblical verse and its sefirotic reading.
