Noting Practice
Gently labeling mental and physical phenomena as they arise, developing clarity about the nature of experience.
Noting is a precise mindfulness technique where we silently label experiences as they occur - 'thinking,' 'feeling,' 'hearing,' 'planning.' This simple practice creates distance between awareness and its objects, revealing that we are not our thoughts or emotions but the space in which they arise. Studies show that noting practice reduces rumination, increases meta-cognitive awareness, and helps practitioners recognize thought patterns more quickly. In Vipassana and Zen training, noting accelerates insight into the impermanent, unsatisfactory, and selfless nature of all phenomena.

- What Zen says about anger
Silently label what is happening — thinking, hearing, planning, angry. Naming it puts you beside the feeling instead of inside it.
