Aitareya Upanishad — Consciousness as the Origin

The Aitareya Upanishad's account of creation as the activity of pure consciousness — 'In the beginning, the Atman alone existed' — grounds the Advaita cosmology in consciousness as the primordial reality.

The Aitareya Upanishad (assigned to the Rig Veda) is the source of the Mahavakya 'Prajnanam Brahma' (Consciousness is Brahman). Its first chapter presents a creation account in which consciousness (Atman) is the sole reality from which all elements and beings emerge — not through mechanical causation but through the creative will of pure awareness. 'In the beginning, the Atman (Self) alone existed. Nothing else blinked. He created the worlds.' The text then describes the creation of the human being as the temporary housing for the Atman — and the recognition that it is the Atman that sees through the eye, speaks through speech, and knows through the mind. The philosophical conclusion: 'All this wisdom, all these different gods, all these beings, all these forms — all this is guided by Prajna (consciousness). The universe is established in Prajna. Prajna is the ground. Prajna is Brahman. Prajnanam Brahma.' This consciousness-first creation account is the Aitareya's foundational contribution to Advaita cosmology.

Prajna (consciousness) is the eye of the world; Prajna is the foundation; Prajna is Brahman.

Aitareya Upanishad, Aitareya Upanishad 3.3

Physicist John Wheeler's participatory universe concept — that the universe requires observers (conscious beings) to bring it into existence through measurement, and that 'its' (the physical world) comes from 'bits' (information/consciousness) — is a modern physics parallel to the Aitareya's teaching that consciousness is the origin and ground of all creation.
