Ojas — The Supreme Essence of Vitality and Immunity
Ojas is the finest product of perfect digestion and healthy tissues — the essence of all bodily fluids that governs immunity, vitality, emotional resilience, and spiritual luminosity.
Ojas (from the root 'uj' — strength, vitality) is described as the cream of all seven bodily tissues — the ultimate refined essence produced when food has been perfectly digested and transformed through each successive layer of tissue metabolism. It is the physical basis of immunity (Vyadhikshamatvam), emotional stability, spiritual development, and the aura of health and attractiveness that radiates from a genuinely healthy person. Para Ojas (the supreme Ojas) is said to reside in the heart; Apara Ojas (the secondary Ojas) pervades the entire body. Eight drops of Para Ojas are held to be the container of life itself. Ojas is depleted by excessive physical exertion, fasting, grief, anger, fear, alcohol, trauma, chronic illness, and sexual excess. It is replenished by adequate sleep, gentle yoga, meditation, wholesome nourishing food, positive relationships, and spiritual practice. The concept of Ojas maps to modern research on the psychoneuroimmunological mechanisms by which psychological wellbeing directly enhances immune function.
Ojas is the essence of all the dhatus; when it is present in adequate quantity, the person shines with vitality and health.
Psychoneuroimmunologist Janice Kiecolt-Glaser's research documents that psychological interventions (meditation, loving relationships, stress reduction) produce measurable improvements in immune markers — confirming the Ayurvedic teaching that Ojas (the interface between mind and immunity) responds to both physical and psychological nourishment.

- What Ayurveda says about rest
Ojas is the refined essence of well-digested food and the physical basis of immunity and steadiness. Charaka says it is spent by overexertion, fasting, grief, anger and fear, and rebuilt by adequate sleep, wholesome food and good relationships. This gives rest a specific object: ojas is what is being restored.
