Tejas — The Subtle Fire of Intelligence
Tejas is the subtle essence of Pitta — the refined metabolic fire that governs mental clarity, the digestion of experience, and the luminosity of consciousness — and is distinct from its gross counterpart in metabolic function.
Tejas (from 'tij' — to sharpen, to shine) is the subtle, refined aspect of the Pitta dosha — just as Ojas is the subtle essence of Kapha and Prana is the subtle essence of Vata. While gross Pitta manifests as digestive enzymes, bile, and body heat, Tejas is the fire of discriminative intelligence that 'digests' experience into wisdom. It is the quality of sharpness in perception, the ability to see through confusion to clarity, and the luminosity of a face that glows with genuine understanding. Tejas is depleted by chronic anger, excessive criticism, intellectual over-exertion, and exposure to harsh stimuli. It is nourished by moderate intellectual engagement, meditation, clarity in relationships, and foods that support Pitta without aggravating it. The concept of Tejas connects Ayurveda directly to Yoga and Vedanta: it is the psychophysical basis of Viveka (discriminative wisdom), Buddhi (intellect), and ultimately the Jnana (wisdom) that liberates.
Tejas is the subtle essence of fire — the clarity of perception that burns away confusion.
Philosopher Daniel Kahneman's distinction between System 1 (fast, intuitive, largely unconscious) and System 2 (slow, deliberate, conscious) thinking corresponds to the Ayurvedic distinction between gross Pitta (reflexive metabolic activity) and Tejas (the refined discriminative intelligence of conscious choice).
