Loka-Purusha Samya — The Body as Microcosm of the Universe

Ayurveda's cosmological principle: the human body (Purusha) is a microcosm of the universe (Loka) — whatever exists in the cosmos exists in the body, and understanding the cosmos illuminates the body's nature.

Sutra 'Yat pinde tad brahmande' — 'what is in the individual, that is in the cosmos' — expresses the Ayurvedic and Vedic principle that the human body is a complete miniature of the universe. The five elements present in the cosmos are the same five elements composing the body; the rhythms of the universe (day and night, the seasons, the lunar cycle) are reflected in the body's rhythms (circadian, seasonal, and menstrual cycles). This is not poetic metaphor but clinical principle: because the body mirrors the cosmos, it is profoundly affected by cosmological rhythms. Dinacharya (daily routine) aligns the body with the day's changing elemental qualities. Ritucharya (seasonal routine) aligns it with the year's changing qualities. The practice of eating locally and seasonally — now confirmed by modern nutritional research — is the practical application of Loka-Purusha Samya.

What is in the individual, that is in the cosmos; what is in the cosmos, that is in the individual.

Chronobiologist Till Roenneberg's research on circadian clocks documents that virtually every cell in the human body contains molecular clocks that entrain to the 24-hour light-dark cycle of the solar day — providing a biochemical mechanism for the Ayurvedic teaching that the body's health is inseparable from its alignment with the cosmic rhythms.
