Abhyanga — Daily Oil Self-Massage for Longevity and Nervous System Health
Abhyanga (self-massage with warm oil appropriate to one's constitution) is one of Ayurveda's most powerful daily practices for nourishing the nervous system, improving circulation, reducing Vata, and promoting longevity.
Abhyanga (from 'abhi' = all over + 'anga' = body) is the practice of daily self-massage with warm, constitution-specific herbal oil. Sesame oil is recommended for Vata types (warming, nourishing), coconut oil for Pitta types (cooling), and lighter oils like sunflower or mustard for Kapha types. Classical texts list remarkable benefits: Ashtanga Hridayam states that daily Abhyanga produces Vata pacification, improved vision, nourishment, long life, sleep quality, healthy skin, and strength — 'just as a well-oiled axle moves without friction.' Traditionally the oil is warmed, applied in long strokes along the limbs and circular strokes at the joints, with extra time given to the scalp, ears, and soles of the feet, and left on before a warm bath. The classical indication is strongest for Vata, whose seat is the colon and the movement of the body, which is why Abhyanga heads the daily remedies for Vata disorders such as dryness, restlessness, and insomnia.
A person who practices daily oil massage is not affected by age, overwork, or Vata disorders.
Charaka groups Abhyanga among the daily duties that resist aging and fatigue (Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana V), and the Ashtanga Hridayam likens the well-oiled body to a leather bag or an axle that resists cracking and wear — the image Vagbhata uses to explain why the practice is done every day, not only when there is complaint.
