Nasya — Nasal Oil Administration for Brain and Sinus Health
Nasya (nasal administration of medicated oils or powders) is a daily Dinacharya practice and Panchakarma treatment that cleanses, nourishes, and strengthens the senses, brain, and nervous system through the nose — 'the gateway to the brain.'
Nasya (from 'nas' — nose) involves the administration of 2-5 drops of warm oil (typically Anu Taila — a classical compound herbal oil in sesame base) into each nostril, usually after the morning Abhyanga and before bathing. The classical rationale: 'Nasam hi shiro dvaram' — 'the nose is the gateway to the head.' By lubricating and medicating the nasal passages, Nasya directly nourishes the brain and nervous system through the anatomically proximate olfactory and trigeminal nerves, which have direct access to the brain through the cribriform plate. Daily Nasya is recommended to prevent sinus congestion, headaches, migraines, sinusitis, premature graying and hair loss, and neurological diseases — and to enhance the senses of smell and vision. Therapeutic (Shodana) Nasya using stronger medicated preparations is a core Panchakarma treatment for neurological conditions, psychosomatic disorders, and chronic sinus disease.
The nose is the gateway to the head; one who practices Nasya daily keeps the head free from disease.
Vagbhata classifies Nasya into types — Shodhana (cleansing), Brimhana (nourishing), and Shamana (palliative) — and directs that daily preventive Nasya use the compound oil Anu Taila, given after sunrise once the morning routine is complete. He counts it among the practices that keep the sense organs clear into old age.

- What Ayurveda says about breath and prana
Oil in the nostrils is a daily practice, on the stated principle that the nose is the doorway to the head. It is the most literal piece of breath care the tradition has of its own.
