Shirodhara — Oil Stream Therapy for Nervous System and Mental Health
Shirodhara (a continuous, rhythmic stream of warm oil poured onto the forehead) is one of Ayurveda's most profoundly relaxing treatments — long prescribed for insomnia, anxiety, and disorders of the mind that Ayurveda traces to disturbed Vata in the head.
Shirodhara (shiro = head + dhara = stream, flow) involves pouring a continuous, thin stream of warm medicated oil in a pendular pattern across the forehead (specifically the ajna chakra region, between the eyebrows) for 30-60 minutes. The experience is described by patients as one of the most deeply relaxing known to humanity — often producing spontaneous meditation states, imagery, and profound peace. Classical texts recommend Shirodhara for insomnia, anxiety, depression, hypertension, neurological disorders, and the burnout that Ayurveda calls 'Vata-Pitta derangement of the mind.' The oil is kept near body temperature and poured from a suspended vessel that swings gently across the forehead so the stream never breaks; medicated oils, buttermilk, or herbal decoctions are chosen according to the patient's constitution and complaint. Shirodhara belongs to Murdha Taila, the classical category of oleation applied to the head.
Shirodhara restores the mind to its natural clarity, as still water reflects the sky.
Vagbhata describes Murdha Taila in four grades of increasing intensity — Shiro Abhyanga (head massage), Shiro Seka or Shirodhara (the poured stream), Shiro Pichu (an oil-soaked cloth), and Shiro Basti (oil retained on the crown within a cap) — Shirodhara sitting in the middle of that range.

- What Ayurveda says about rest
For the burnout the texts call Vata-Pitta derangement of the mind, the classical answer is Shirodhara: warm medicated oil poured across the forehead for 30 to 60 minutes from a swinging vessel, so the stream never breaks. Vagbhata grades it the second of four head-oleation therapies, above a head massage and below oil held on the crown in a cap.
