Vamana — Therapeutic Emesis for Kapha Disorders

Vamana (controlled therapeutic emesis) is the primary Panchakarma treatment for Kapha excess — systematically eliminating accumulated Kapha, particularly from the respiratory system, through controlled, medicated vomiting.

Vamana (therapeutic emesis) is the Panchakarma treatment specifically indicated for severe Kapha disorders: asthma, chronic bronchitis, allergies, sinusitis, and the psychological manifestations of Kapha excess — depression, emotional heaviness, grief, excessive attachment, and lethargy. It is performed after thorough Purvakarma (3-7 days of internal and external oleation followed by Svedana) that softens and mobilizes accumulated Kapha. The procedure itself typically involves the administration of Madanaphala (Randia spinosa) decoction or a sweet, sour, salty preparation that stimulates the emetic reflex. After Vamana, patients commonly report extraordinary lightness, respiratory clarity, improved taste and smell, and a lifting of psychological heaviness that may have been present for years. Vamana is the most challenging Panchakarma treatment to administer and receive, requiring close supervision by a trained practitioner.

When Kapha is in excess, no other treatment equals Vamana in its power to eliminate it.

Clinical research on emesis therapy for asthma and severe Kapha disorders has documented significant improvements in respiratory function and inflammatory markers following properly administered Vamana therapy, supporting the classical Ayurvedic indication for this intensive purification treatment.
