Brahmi and Mandukaparni — The Two Medhya Rasayanas for Mind

Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) and Mandukaparni (Centella asiatica) are the most important of the four Medhya Rasayana herbs — cognitive-enhancing tonics that improve memory, intelligence, and the overall health of the nervous system.

Medhya Rasayana (Medha = intelligence, understanding + Rasayana = rejuvenating) are four herbs specifically classified by Charaka for their cognitive-enhancing and nervous system-rejuvenating properties: Brahmi/Mandukaparni (Bacopa monnieri / Centella asiatica), Shankhapushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis), and Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra). Brahmi (Bacopa) — bitter and astringent in taste, cooling in potency — is the premier cognitive Rasayana: it improves memory consolidation, reduces anxiety, enhances information processing speed, and protects against neurotoxicity. Clinical research has confirmed significant improvements in memory retention, information processing, and anxiety reduction with Bacopa monnieri supplementation over 12 weeks in both healthy adults and those with age-related cognitive decline. Mandukaparni (Gotu kola) has similar cognitive and nervine benefits with additional wound-healing and connective tissue-supporting activities.

Brahmi is the best herb for the mind; it sharpens intelligence, improves memory, and pacifies the nervous system.

A meta-analysis of 9 randomized controlled trials published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2014) confirmed that Bacopa monnieri significantly improved memory-free recall, with the effect growing stronger with longer supplementation periods — supporting Ayurveda's classification of Brahmi as a Rasayana whose effects accumulate with sustained use.
