Rasa Dhatu — The Plasma Tissue
Rasa (plasma/lymph) is the first and most fundamental of the seven body tissues, nourishing all other tissues and carrying the essence of digested food throughout the body.
Rasa Dhatu is the first dhatu (body tissue) formed from food after digestion. It is the clear nutritive fluid — analogous to plasma and lymph in modern medicine — that carries nourishment to every cell and tissue in the body. Rasa literally means 'essence' or 'taste,' reflecting its role as the refined extract of everything we consume. Healthy Rasa is characterized by clarity, proper flow, and subtle nourishment; its deficiency produces dryness, fatigue, and poor circulation. Rasa is also the seat of contentment (Priti) — when Rasa is in balance, there is a deep sense of satisfaction with life. Modern research on plasma proteins, lymphocyte circulation, and the role of the lymphatic system in immune function and nutrient transport validates the central role Ayurveda assigned to this first tissue layer.
From food arises Rasa; from Rasa, Rakta; and thus in sequence all the tissues of the body are nourished and sustained.
The modern discovery that the lymphatic system plays a crucial role in immune surveillance, fat absorption, and waste clearance — functions Ayurveda attributed to Rasa — represents a striking convergence between ancient classification and contemporary physiology.
