Mamsa Dhatu — The Muscle Tissue
Mamsa (muscle) is the third body tissue, providing structural strength, movement, and the physical capacity for purposeful action in the world.
Mamsa Dhatu encompasses all muscular tissue — skeletal, smooth, and cardiac. It provides the body with its capacity for movement, strength, and the ability to act in the world. In Ayurveda, Mamsa is the seat of courage (Bala) and is associated with Kapha's structural principle — healthy Mamsa is firm, well-formed, and responsive. Mamsa is nourished by Rakta and in turn nourishes Meda (fat tissue). Its disorders include muscle atrophy, excessive musculature, tumors, and various inflammatory conditions. The practice of Vyayama (exercise) is the primary tool for maintaining healthy Mamsa — Charaka's guidelines for appropriate exercise (moderate intensity, season-appropriate, building gradually) anticipate modern exercise physiology in their emphasis on progressive overload, recovery, and individualization.
Mamsa gives firmness and courage; its health is maintained through appropriate exercise and nourishing food.
The science of myology and exercise physiology has confirmed that muscle tissue is metabolically central — a 'secretory organ' that releases myokines affecting brain, fat, bone, and immune function — far exceeding the structural role ancient observers might have imagined.
