Prana, Tejas, and Ojas — The Subtle Essence Triad

Beyond the gross tissues, Ayurveda identifies three subtle essences — Prana (vital force), Tejas (inner radiance), and Ojas (vitality) — that represent the refined counterparts of the three doshas at the level of consciousness.

Prana, Tejas, and Ojas are the subtlest expressions of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha respectively — not the gross doshas but their most refined, life-supporting forms. Prana is the subtle life-force that animates the nervous system and gives rise to all movement, sensation, and awareness. Tejas is the inner luminosity — the digestive fire of the mind — that transforms sensory experience into intelligence and discrimination. Ojas is the subtle immune-vitality substance that sustains physical resilience and psychological equanimity. In balance, these three sustain optimal health; their derangement into the gross dosha pattern produces disease. Spiritual practices — pranayama, meditation, mantra, devotion — are considered the most direct means of strengthening Prana, Tejas, and Ojas, because they act at the subtlest level of the body-mind continuum.

Prana is the force of life, Tejas the light of awareness, Ojas the nectar of vitality — together they sustain the highest human flourishing.

Vasant Lad, Textbook of Ayurveda, Volume 1

Ojas in particular is described by Charaka as the essence of all seven tissues, seated in the heart, whose loss brings fear, weakness, and finally death. The classical remedy for depleted Ojas is therefore not stimulation but nourishment, rest, and equanimity — the same measures the texts assign to Prana and Tejas.

  • What Ayurveda says about breath and prana

Beneath the three doshas the tradition names three refined essences: prana the vital force, tejas the light of the mind, ojas the substance of resilience. Breath practice is placed at this subtle end rather than among the physical treatments.
