Dhatvagni — The Seven Tissue Fires
Each of the seven body tissues has its own Dhatvagni (tissue fire) that transforms the nutritive fluid arriving from digestion into the specific tissue substance — and then into the next tissue in the sequence.
The seven Dhatvagnis — Rasagni, Raktagni, Mamsagni, Medagni, Asthyagni, Majjagni, and Shukragni — are the metabolic intelligences within each tissue that transform incoming Rasa (nutritive plasma) into the specific tissue substance. This model describes a sequential tissue-building cascade: Jatharagni processes food into Ahara Rasa (food essence); Rasagni transforms this into Rasa Dhatu; Raktagni transforms Rasa Dhatu into Rakta Dhatu; and so on through all seven tissues over approximately 30 days. The health of each Dhatvagni determines the quality of the tissue produced — strong Dhatvagni produces healthy tissue; weak Dhatvagni produces Ama (unprocessed metabolic residue) that accumulates and eventually causes disease. Modern cellular metabolism research — showing how each tissue type has unique metabolic machinery — validates this ancient tissue-specific metabolic framework.
Just as fire in a smithy transforms crude metal into refined gold, the Dhatvagnis transform crude nutritive fluid into each refined tissue.
Cell biology has confirmed that each tissue type has dramatically different metabolic profiles — hepatocytes, neurons, cardiomyocytes, and osteoblasts each have unique enzyme systems and energy substrates — precisely the tissue-specific metabolic intelligence the concept of Dhatvagni described.

- What Ayurveda says about growing old
The seven Dhatvagnis explain why old age is not simply a matter of eating too little. Each tissue carries its own metabolic fire, and when those weaken the food is eaten but not converted. The cascade from plasma through to reproductive essence takes roughly 30 days and can fail at any step.
