Langhana and Brimhana — The Principle of Reduction and Nourishment
Ayurvedic therapeutics is organized around two fundamental treatment principles: Langhana (lightening/reducing therapies) for excess conditions, and Brimhana (nourishing/building therapies) for deficiency conditions.
All Ayurvedic treatments ultimately fall into one of two categories: Langhana (lightening) or Brimhana (nourishing). Langhana encompasses all therapies that reduce, purify, and lighten — including fasting, digestive herbs, Panchakarma purification, diaphoresis, and light foods. It is the treatment for excess conditions: obesity, Ama accumulation, Kapha and Pitta excess. Brimhana encompasses all therapies that build, nourish, and strengthen — including Rasayana herbs, healthy fats, building foods, adequate sleep, and rejuvenative practices. It is the treatment for deficiency conditions: emaciation, weakness, tissue depletion, Vata excess. The sophistication lies in correct diagnosis of which principle to apply — or how to sequence them — since applying the wrong principle worsens the condition. Modern clinical nutrition is increasingly recognizing this same distinction between catabolic (reducing) and anabolic (building) protocols.
Langhana for the heavy; Brimhana for the light — this is the first and most essential principle of all Ayurvedic treatment.
Metabolic medicine's distinction between catabolic protocols (caloric restriction, intermittent fasting, detoxification protocols) and anabolic protocols (resistance training, high-protein diets, supplementation) mirrors the Ayurvedic Langhana/Brimhana framework with its emphasis on matching treatment direction to the patient's metabolic state.

- What Ayurveda says about rest
Every Ayurvedic treatment is either Langhana, lightening, or Brimhana, building, and rest sits squarely in Brimhana. Here is the uncomfortable half: for a heavy, congested, Ama-laden person the prescribed treatment is fasting and reduction, not more sleep. Rest applied to the wrong condition makes it worse.
