Rasayana — The Science of Rejuvenation

Rasayana is Ayurveda's dedicated science of healthy aging and rejuvenation, offering specific herbs, lifestyle practices, and treatments that rebuild depleted tissues, strengthen Ojas, and extend vital, healthy life.

Rasayana (literally 'the path of Rasa') is the eighth branch of Ashtanga Ayurveda devoted entirely to rejuvenation and longevity. Charaka defines its goals as: long life, sharp memory, freedom from disease, youthful appearance, excellence of complexion and voice, optimum strength, and the brilliance of the sense organs. Rasayana works by enhancing Agni, clearing Srotas, and directly nourishing the tissues — particularly Ojas. There are two modes: Kutipraveshika (intensive residential treatment in a specially prepared chamber) and Vatatapika (ambulatory treatment compatible with daily life). Major Rasayana substances include Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), and Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri). Modern geroscience — the science of aging — has validated numerous Rasayana herbs as having measurable effects on cellular aging pathways.

Rasayana gives length of life, memory, intelligence, freedom from disease, youth, excellence of complexion, and the strength of the senses.

Charaka, Charaka Samhita, Chikitsa Sthana 1.1.7

Charaka opens the Chikitsasthana with Rasayana, treating rejuvenation as the first branch of therapeutics and naming Amalaki, Haritaki, Guduchi, and Brahmi among the herbs that restore the tissues and slow decline. Rasayana was regarded as a distinct discipline within Ayurveda, not merely a class of tonics.

  • What Ayurveda says about growing old

Rasayana is the eighth branch of Ayurveda, an entire division of medicine given to aging rather than to disease. Charaka's stated aims are long life, sharp memory, freedom from disease, good complexion and the brilliance of the senses, and the method is strengthening Agni, clearing the channels and feeding Ojas.
