Medhya Rasayana — The Intelligence-Enhancing Herbs
Medhya Rasayana are the four herbs specifically prescribed by Charaka for enhancing intelligence, memory, and the higher cognitive functions — the Ayurvedic nootropics.
Charaka identifies four herbs as Medhya Rasayana — specifically targeted at enhancing Medha (intelligence, discernment) and Smriti (memory): Mandukparni (Centella asiatica — Gotu Kola), Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra — Licorice), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), and Shankhapushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis). Each has a different mechanism: Mandukparni enhances neuronal branching and BDNF; Yashtimadhu has anxiolytic and adaptogenic effects; Guduchi is immunomodulatory and neuroprotective; Shankhapushpi enhances acetylcholine synthesis. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) and Ashwagandha are also often classified as Medhya Rasayana in broader usage. The concept of a specific class of intelligence-enhancing plants — long before the modern nootropics movement — represents one of Ayurveda's most prescient contributions to pharmacology.
The four Medhya Rasayana give intelligence, memory, retention, and the clarity to distinguish truth from falsehood.
Modern neuropharmacology has validated the nootropic classification of all four Medhya Rasayana herbs: Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) has been shown to increase BDNF and NGF, enhance neuroplasticity, and improve memory in multiple animal and human studies.
