Bahá'í Faith

A Universal Auxiliary Language

For the unity of humanity, a universal auxiliary language should be adopted by all nations to facilitate communication while preserving native languages.

Bahá'u'lláh called for the nations of the world to agree upon a single auxiliary language — not replacing native languages but enabling universal communication. This practical step toward world unity would eliminate communication barriers, facilitate understanding, and symbolize the recognition of human interconnection.

It behoveth the sovereigns of the world — may God assist them — or the ministers of the earth to take counsel together and to adopt one of the existing languages or a new one to be taught to children in schools throughout the world.

The proposal for an international auxiliary language anticipates the creation of Esperanto and the adoption of English as a de facto international language.
