Democratic Governance

The Bahá'í administrative institutions are democratically elected, serving the whole community rather than individual leaders' interests.

Bahá'í communities are governed by elected bodies — Local, National, and Universal Houses of Justice — chosen by secret ballot. There is no campaigning or nomination; individuals vote their conscience for whoever they believe best embodies the required qualities of trustworthiness, wisdom, and dedication to service.

The Universal House of Justice is elected by the national spiritual assemblies of the Bahá'í world.

The Bahá'í electoral system is studied as a model of principled democratic selection that minimizes campaigning and personal ambition.
