Bahá'í Faith

The Balance of Spiritual and Material

Material prosperity, properly pursued and shared, is a legitimate goal that can support spiritual development and service to humanity.

The Bahá'í writings are not ascetic — they do not condemn material prosperity or worldly engagement. Material wealth, acquired through legitimate means and shared generously, can support both personal wellbeing and service to humanity. The error is placing material acquisition above spiritual development or failing to share prosperity with those in need.

Wealth is praiseworthy in the highest degree, if it is acquired by an individual's own efforts and the grace of God.

Abdu'l-Bahá, The Secret of Divine Civilization

The Bahá'í balanced view of wealth creation and sharing anticipates modern social enterprise models that integrate commercial success with social mission.
