Bahá'í Faith

Nearness to God

The ultimate aspiration of the soul is nearness to God — a state of spiritual proximity achieved through virtue, love, and service.

Throughout Bahá'í writings, nearness to God (qurb ilallah) is described as the highest aspiration and the ultimate destination of the human soul. This nearness is not physical but spiritual — a state of alignment between the soul's qualities and divine attributes. Prayer, meditation, service, and virtuous living all contribute to this nearness.

Blessed is he who in the prime of his youth and the heyday of his life will arise to serve the Cause of the Lord of the beginning and of the end.

Bahá'u'lláh, Tablets of Bahá'u'lláh

The concept of nearness to God parallels Sufi concepts of taqarrub and Christian concepts of union with God while maintaining God's essential transcendence.
