Bhagavad Gita

Four Types of Devotees

Four types of virtuous souls worship Me: the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the wise.

Krishna acknowledges that people approach the Divine for different reasons. Some come in distress seeking relief, others seeking knowledge or material success, and the wise come out of pure love. All are welcomed, though Krishna indicates the wise devotee is dearest because their love is unconditional. This teaching honors all motivations for seeking God while pointing toward the evolution from self-centered to selfless devotion.

Four kinds of pious people begin to render devotional service unto Me: the distressed, the desirer of wealth, the inquisitive, and he who is searching for knowledge of the Absolute.

Lord Krishna, Bhagavad Gita 7.16

Ramanujacharya explains that all four types are virtuous because they turn to God rather than worldly solutions—the first step toward pure devotion.
