Three Types of Giving
Charity given without expectation of return, at the proper time and place, to a worthy person, is sattvic.
Even generosity has three qualities. Sattvic giving is selfless—offered to worthy recipients without expecting return. Rajasic giving expects reciprocation or is done reluctantly. Tamasic giving is disrespectful, ill-timed, or directed to unworthy recipients. This teaching examines our motivations for giving, inviting us to purify generosity from ego-involvement. The highest charity flows from abundance of heart, not calculation of benefit.
Charity given out of duty, without expectation of return, at the proper time and place, and to a worthy person is considered to be in the mode of goodness.
Jesus taught similar—the right hand shouldn't know what the left is doing. Pure giving flows without self-consciousness or calculation.
