Three Types of Knowledge
That knowledge by which one sees the one imperishable reality in all beings, undivided in the divided, is sattvic.
Knowledge has three levels. Sattvic knowledge sees the one reality in all diverse forms—unity underlying multiplicity. Rajasic knowledge sees only differences, treating each being as separate. Tamasic knowledge clings to one thing as if it were everything, confusing part for whole. This epistemological teaching invites us to examine how we perceive reality—are we seeing unity, diversity, or delusion?
That knowledge by which one undivided spiritual nature is seen in all living entities, though they are divided into innumerable forms, you should understand to be in the mode of goodness.
Perception of unity in diversity is the mark of wisdom—seeing the same Self in all beings spontaneously generates compassion.
