The Salmon of Wisdom
The mythic salmon that consumed the hazelnuts of knowledge, granting wisdom to those who taste it.
In the pool beneath the nine hazel trees swam the Salmon of Wisdom, having eaten all the nuts that fell. Fionn mac Cumhaill gained wisdom by tasting this salmon, showing that knowledge comes through nature and must be earned through service and patience.
The salmon swims upstream against all currents; so must the seeker of wisdom.
The salmon symbolizes the Celtic reverence for wisdom as a natural gift requiring dedication to obtain.

- What Celtic tradition says about knowing yourself
Fionn gains wisdom by tasting a salmon that had eaten the nuts of knowledge. The telling is careful about the order: the knowledge arrives during service and patience, not during a search for it.
