The Sacred Hazel
The hazel tree as source of wisdom, its nuts feeding the Salmon of Knowledge.
Nine hazel trees grew over the Well of Wisdom, dropping their nuts into the water where the Salmon of Wisdom ate them. Hazel wands were used for divination, and hazel nuts were gathered at Samhain. The hazel represents concentrated wisdom.
The hazel holds its wisdom in small packages; so too is truth often found in few words.
The hazel's association with wisdom shows Celtic understanding of knowledge as natural and concentrated.
