Hospitality - Sacred Duty
Hospitality to guests is a sacred obligation that the gods themselves observe.
Hospitality was among the most sacred Celtic duties. The stranger at the door might be a god in disguise. Hosts provided food, shelter, and protection; guests behaved honorably. Violating hospitality from either side brought divine punishment and social disgrace.
The door opened to the stranger may open to a god.
Hospitality rules structured Celtic society and provided social safety networks.
