Blessed Are the Meek
Gentle strength under God's control inherits lasting influence and the earth itself.
Meekness is not weakness but strength under control—like a powerful horse responding to its rider's gentle touch. The meek possess the earth not through conquest but through patient faithfulness and trust in God's timing. Jesus himself embodied this quality, describing himself as 'gentle and humble in heart.' The line is a near-quotation of Psalm 37:11 — Jesus is promising the land-inheritance of an existing psalm, not coining a proverb. The meek inherit because they cooperate with God's purposes rather than forcing their own agenda.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
C.S. Lewis noted that meekness is strength surrendered to God, the opposite of self-assertion—not the absence of power but power under divine direction.

- What Christianity says about humility
Meekness here is not timidity. It is described as strength held under control, and what it is promised is the earth.
