Build on the Rock
Those who hear and practice Jesus's teachings build lives that withstand life's storms.
The Sermon on the Mount concludes with the parable of two builders—one building on rock (obedience to Jesus's words), the other on sand (hearing without doing). Both face the same storm, but only the rock foundation stands. This teaching emphasizes that Jesus's words are not merely informational but transformational when practiced. Knowledge without obedience is spiritual self-deception. Both builders heard the same sermon and both met the same storm. The only variable Jesus names is doing (Matthew 7:24-27). The foundation is laid through consistent, daily obedience, not occasional heroic acts.
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
James echoes this teaching: 'Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves'—faith without works is dead.
