You Shall Not Commit Adultery

Sexual purity protects the covenant of marriage and honors the body as God's temple.

The seventh commandment protects marriage and sexual integrity. Jesus extends it inward: 'Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery in his heart.' Sexual sin begins with the imagination before becoming action. Marriage reflects Christ's love for the church and is not to be violated. This teaching honors the body as temple of the Holy Spirit and calls for self-control. Jesus's remedy is drastic and physical — cut off, tear out (Matthew 5:29-30) — hyperbole aimed at what the eyes practise daily. Purity is not repression but integration of sexuality within God's design.

You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Jesus Christ, Gospel of Matthew 5:27-28

C.S. Lewis wrote that chastity is 'the most unpopular of Christian virtues' but essential for developing the capacity for self-giving love.
