Be Perfect as Your Father Is Perfect
The call to divine perfection challenges believers toward continual growth in Christlikeness.
Jesus concludes his teaching on love of enemies with the stunning command: 'Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.' In Luke's parallel, 'Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.' The word 'perfect' (teleios) means complete, mature, fully developed. This is not sinless perfection but the goal toward which Christians grow. God's character becomes the standard—we aim to love as He loves. This lofty calling prevents complacency and drives believers to depend on grace while striving toward transformation into Christ's image.
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
John Wesley taught 'Christian perfection' as perfect love—not freedom from all fault but complete devotion to God and neighbor.
