Redemption Through Christ's Blood

Jesus's sacrificial death purchases forgiveness and freedom from sin's bondage.

Redemption means 'buying back'—Christ's blood is the purchase price that frees captives from sin's slavery. 'In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.' The imagery draws from slave markets and the Passover lamb. We were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold but with Christ's precious blood. This doctrine reveals both the seriousness of sin (requiring such a price) and the depth of God's love (willing to pay it). Freedom in Christ is real freedom—not license to sin but liberation from sin's power.

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace.

Paul the Apostle, Ephesians 1:7

Anselm of Canterbury's Cur Deus Homo explained redemption through substitutionary atonement—Christ paying the debt humanity could not pay.
