Perseverance of the Saints
God preserves genuine believers in faith to the end through His sustaining grace.
Jesus promises, 'I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.' Genuine believers are kept by God's power through faith for final salvation. This does not produce complacency but confidence—security in God's faithfulness, not presumption about our performance. The doctrine emphasizes that salvation depends on God's keeping, not human effort. Those who truly believe will continue to believe because God is faithful. This security provides foundation for joyful obedience rather than anxious striving.
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.
John Calvin taught that 'the perseverance of the saints is the preservation of the saints'—God keeps those He has called.
