Praising God in All Seasons
Praise is appropriate in all circumstances as an expression of trust in God's sovereignty.
The Psalms model praise in prosperity and adversity alike. David praised God when fleeing for his life; Paul and Silas sang in prison. The 'sacrifice of praise' is offered when feelings resist it. Praise shifts focus from circumstances to the character of God who never changes. It is both response to blessing and act of faith during trial. Psalm 34's own superscription places it when David feigned madness to escape a king. “At all times” was written on the run. Praise is spiritual warfare—demons flee when God is praised.
I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.
C.S. Lewis discovered that 'the perfect humility which would appreciate God if He had no gifts would simply be itself pure gift' through praise.
