Taming the Tongue

The tongue has immense power for good or evil and requires spiritual mastery.

James devotes an entire chapter to the tongue: small but powerful, like a spark that sets a forest ablaze. 'The tongue is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.' No human can tame it; only divine grace can control our speech. The same tongue blesses God and curses people made in God's image—'this should not be.' Words reveal the heart and shape reality. James gives a measurable test: anyone who does not stumble in speech is “perfect, able to keep their whole body in check” (3:2). Guarding speech is not merely social nicety but spiritual discipline.

The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.

James the Apostle, James 3:6

Solomon in Proverbs repeatedly emphasizes speech: 'The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.'
