Yi and Ren

Righteousness and benevolence work together.

Yi without ren can become harsh and rigid. Ren without yi can become weak and unprincipled. Together they create the balanced, virtuous person who is both kind and just.

Ren is the essence of a person; yi is the proper path.

Mencius, Mencius 7A.6
