Nous — Divine Mind as Revealer

Nous (Divine Mind) is the first emanation of the Monad capable of knowing the Father — the divine intelligence that makes the Invisible Spirit known and is the source of all Gnosis.

Nous (Greek: mind, intellect) is the highest Aeon that directly comprehends the Invisible Spirit — functioning as the revealer who can know the unknowable Father and transmit that knowledge downward through the divine hierarchy. In Sethian Gnosticism, Nous is sometimes identified with the Christ — the divine intelligence that descends into the world to awaken the sleeping pneumatics (spiritual beings) to their true nature. Nous represents the principle that divine reality is not blind force but intelligence — the universe is fundamentally intelligent, and true knowledge (Gnosis) is a participation in that divine intelligence. The Gnostic emphasis on Nous resonates with the Neoplatonic tradition (Plotinus's Second Hypostasis) and anticipates the Christian identification of the Logos with divine intelligence. In Gnostic practice, awakening Nous is awakening the divine intelligence that can recognize the soul's origin in the Pleroma.

Through Nous alone can the Father be known — for the Father is silent, and only the Mind that proceeds from him can speak his nature.

Philosopher Hans Jonas (The Gnostic Religion) identifies Nous as the pivotal concept in Gnostic theology — the bridge between the utterly transcendent Monad and the world of beings who can know and be known.
