The Restoration of the Pleroma — Apokatastasis

The ultimate Gnostic hope is the restoration of all divine sparks to the Pleroma — the apokatastasis (universal restoration) in which the cosmic drama of fall and redemption reaches its completion.

Apokatastasis (Greek: restoration, restitution) is the Gnostic vision of the end of the cosmic drama — when all divine sparks have been awakened, gathered, and restored to the Pleroma, completing the circuit of emanation and return. In Valentinian thought, the restoration is accomplished when the pneumatic souls ascain sufficient Gnosis to pass beyond the planetary spheres (ruled by the Archons), through the lower heavens ruled by the Demiurge, and into the Pleroma itself — joining their Aeon counterparts in the divine fullness. This vision differs from orthodox Christian salvation in significant ways: it is not a resurrection into a new earth but a return to a purely spiritual realm; it involves the direct knowledge (Gnosis) of the divine rather than faith alone; and it potentially includes a universal scope (all pneumatic sparks eventually restored). The Zoroastrian, Platonic, and Origenist traditions each contain versions of this universal restoration hope.

When all the spiritual seed has attained to perfect knowledge, then Achamoth will also depart to her Consort, and the spiritual seed will be clothed with their Aeons and enter the Pleroma.

Irenaeus (reporting Valentinian teaching), Against Heresies 1.7.1

Theologian Ilaria Ramelli (The Christian Doctrine of Apokatastasis) traces the concept of universal restoration from its Gnostic formulations through Origen to later Christian universalist traditions, documenting a persistent theological strand that insists the divine is not ultimately defeated by the fall.

The endpoint is apokatastasis: every spark eventually gathered back, the circuit of going out and returning closed. Irenaeus reports the Valentinian condition — the seed enters the Pleroma only when all of it has attained knowledge. Nothing is finally lost, but nothing is finished early either.
