Fate and the Heimarmene — The Archons' Control

Heimarmene (fate) is the Gnostic term for the cosmic system of astrological determinism through which the Archons control human life — and which Gnosis alone can transcend.

Heimarmene (Greek: fate, destiny, the ordained) is the Gnostic concept of the astrological-cosmic system through which the Archons exercise their control over human lives. The Archons, as rulers of the planetary spheres, imprint their qualities on souls as they descend into material bodies — giving each person a horoscope that governs much of their earthly life. Heimarmene is thus the mechanism of the Archons' power: through the determinism of fate, they keep souls circling in ignorance, lifetime after lifetime, never transcending their material condition. The liberating power of Gnosis is precisely its ability to break the power of Heimarmene: the pneumatic soul who recognizes their true origin in the Pleroma is no longer subject to the Archons' fate, because they have awakened to a dimension of their being that transcends planetary influence. This critique of astrological determinism is one of Gnosticism's most practically relevant teachings — against any system that claims to determine human destiny through external forces.

The wise person is free from fate. Their star is in the Father, not the heavens of the Archons.

Excerpts of Theodotus, Excerpts of Theodotus 78.2

Historian of science Otto Neugebauer noted that Gnosticism's critique of astrological determinism was one of the few ancient voices resisting the pervasive Hellenistic belief that human destiny was written in the stars — making the Gnostics early advocates for human freedom against cosmic determinism.

  • What Gnosticism says about fate

Heimarmene is the name for the whole system. Souls are said to be stamped with planetary qualities on the way into a body, and then to spend a life playing out the stamp. It is the closest thing here to a theory of why people repeat themselves.
