The Kingdom Within — Gnostic Interiority
The Gnostic teaching that the Kingdom of God is not a place but a state of inner recognition — located within the awakened consciousness rather than in any external reality — is one of its most enduring and universal insights.
The Gospel of Thomas preserves Jesus's most radical teaching about the Kingdom: 'If those who lead you say, See, the kingdom is in the sky, then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, It is in the sea, then the fish will precede you. Rather, the kingdom is inside you and outside you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that it is you who are the children of the living Father' (Saying 3). This radical internalization of the Kingdom — locating spiritual reality within human consciousness rather than in a future external event — is one of the Gnostic tradition's most universally appealing teachings. It resonates with the Advaita Vedanta understanding of liberation as recognition rather than attainment, with Buddhist teachings on Buddha-nature, and with the mystical traditions of all major religions that locate the divine within rather than only without.
The kingdom is inside you and outside you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will be known.
Philosopher William James (The Varieties of Religious Experience) identified the noetic quality — the sense that mystical experience conveys genuine knowledge of reality — as one of its defining characteristics. The Gnostic 'Kingdom within' teaching produces precisely this noetic quality: a direct recognition of what is rather than a belief about what might be.

- What Gnosticism says about knowing yourself
The same saying is also a statement about location. Whatever is being looked for is not in the sky or the sea or a future event, and the search therefore has no distance to travel.
