Sophia Achamoth's Restoration — The Cosmic Happy Ending

The ultimate restoration of Sophia Achamoth — her reunion with the Angel Christ and her elevation to the place of the Eighth heaven — is the Valentinian vision of the cosmic restoration that enables all other restorations.

In Valentinian eschatology, the restoration of Sophia Achamoth (the lower Sophia exiled from the Pleroma) is the cosmic event that enables the restoration of all pneumatic souls. When the last spiritual seed has attained full Gnosis, Sophia Achamoth will be reunited with her Consort (the Angel Christ) and elevated to the Eighth heaven — the region just below the Pleroma but above the seven planetary spheres of the Archons. This elevation is not a full return to the Pleroma but a restoration to her proper place — the Ogdoad (the eighth) — from which she can properly function as the consort of the Demiurge (now reformed under her influence) while remaining in proximity to the Pleroma. The pneumatic souls will then enter the Pleroma itself, joining their Aeon counterparts in the eternal divine wedding. The material world, having fulfilled its purpose as the field for the pneuma's awakening, will dissolve into the deficiency from which it arose.

When the Mother has been restored to the Ogdoad, all the pneumatic seeds will be gathered and taken into the Pleroma.

Irenaeus (reporting Valentinian teaching), Against Heresies 1.7.1

Theologian Origen's concept of apokatastasis panton (the restoration of all things) — though formulated within orthodox Christianity — shares the Valentinian vision of a final cosmic restoration that includes even the most fallen elements of creation, suggesting that the universalist hope transcends the Gnostic-orthodox boundary.

  • What Gnosticism says about starting again after a fall

Here the tradition is uncomfortable, and says so in its own detail. Achamoth is restored to the Ogdoad, the eighth heaven — not to her original Aeon, which another has since filled. You get a place. You do not get the place back.
