The Trimorphic Protennoia — The Three-Formed First Thought

The Trimorphic Protennoia is a stunning Sethian text in which the divine feminine First Thought proclaims her three-fold descent into the world to awaken, illuminate, and ultimately save the sleeping divine sparks.

The Trimorphic Protennoia (Three-Formed First Thought, NHC XIII, 1) is a first-person aretalogy of remarkable literary power — the divine First Thought (Protennoia/Barbelo) proclaims her three descents into the world of darkness to awaken the sleeping pneumatics. In her first descent, she appears as the Voice who speaks in the darkness, awakening those who sleep. In her second descent, she appears as Speech (Logos) who dwells among those who speak. In her third descent, she appears as the Word who dwells among those who see — taking on a human form (identified with Christ) to reveal the final Gnosis and grant the Five Seals. The text is striking for its feminine divine protagonist — the first thought of the Invisible Spirit descends repeatedly, with ever-greater condescension and intimacy, to reach the sleeping sparks. Its structural parallel to the Prologue of John (both concern the cosmic Word's descent into the world) has been noted by many scholars.

I am the movement that dwells in the All. I am the one who is hidden in the light — I am the invisible one within the All.

Yvonne Janssens's critical edition of the Trimorphic Protennoia demonstrated its literary sophistication and theological depth — identifying it as one of the finest examples of Sethian literary art and a crucial witness to the divine feminine in early Gnostic thought.
