Hermeticism

The Twelve Tormentors

The vices that bind the soul to ignorance.

The twelve tormentors are: Ignorance, Grief, Incontinence, Concupiscence, Injustice, Covetousness, Deceit, Envy, Treachery, Anger, Rashness, and Malice. These bind the soul to matter and must be expelled for rebirth.

These are the twelve tormentors... By these the man enclosed in the body is tormented.

Hermes, Corpus Hermeticum, Book XIII

The twelve tormentors correspond to psychological and spiritual obstacles.

  • What Hermeticism says about illness and the body failing

The thirteenth treatise lists twelve tormentors, and Grief stands second, right after Ignorance. Hermeticism does not treat the feelings around a failing body as symptoms to be excused; it treats them as things to be expelled before rebirth. That is a hard demand to make of someone who is ill.
