Hermeticism

Teacher and Student

The transmission of wisdom from adept to aspirant.

While much can be learned from books, full transmission requires a teacher who has walked the path. The teacher guides, protects, and opens doors that the student cannot open alone.

When the student is ready, the teacher appears.

Traditional Saying, Traditional Wisdom

The teacher-student relationship is central to genuine transmission.

  • What Hermeticism says about teachers and lineage

Books are held to take a student part of the way and no further; the rest is said to need someone who has already walked it. The teacher's job is described as opening what the student cannot open alone.
