The Middle Way - Wasatiyyah
Islam's emphasis on moderation and balance in all aspects of worship and life.
Wasatiyyah (الوسطية) is the principle of moderation that defines Islam as a balanced religion. The Quran describes Muslims as 'a middle nation' (ummatan wasatan)—balanced between extremes. This applies to worship (neither excessive nor negligent), spending (neither extravagant nor miserly), and belief (neither blind following nor rejection). The Prophet (PBUH) warned against extremism, saying 'those who go to extremes are destroyed.' Islam rejects monasticism's rejection of worldly life and also pure materialism. The middle way integrates spiritual and material concerns, creating a holistic life of faith.
And thus We have made you a middle nation that you will be witnesses over the people.
Ibn Taymiyyah explained that Islam's moderation makes it universally applicable—not burdening people beyond their capacity while still calling them to spiritual heights.
