The Signs of Hypocrisy

Identifying the three characteristics that reveal the hypocrite: lying, breaking promises, and betraying trust.

The Prophet (PBUH) warned: 'The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays.' These traits destroy the fabric of community and relationships. Unlike sins that harm primarily the sinner, hypocrisy corrupts trust itself. The believer must constantly examine themselves for these traits and actively cultivate their opposites: truthfulness, reliability, and trustworthiness. Islam's emphasis on character means that faith must manifest in consistent ethical behavior, not just ritual worship.

The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Sahih Bukhari, Book 2, Hadith 32

Al-Nawawi explained that having one of these traits indicates a tendency toward hypocrisy that must be actively combated through its opposite virtue.

Sahih Bukhari

  • What Islam says about what to say and what to leave unsaid

The three named signs of a hypocrite are all speech failures: he lies, he breaks what he promised, he betrays what he was trusted with. They are singled out because they corrupt trust itself rather than only the speaker — which is why the list is a diagnosis to run on yourself, not a label to hand out.
