The Strong Believer

The teaching that strength combined with faith is more beloved to Allah than weakness.

The Prophet (PBUH) said: 'The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.' This hadith encourages developing strength—physical, mental, financial, and spiritual—while maintaining faith. Strength enables one to help others, defend the oppressed, and contribute more. The Prophet encouraged activities like swimming, archery, and horseback riding. However, both strong and weak believers have good if they maintain faith. Strength without faith is dangerous; faith without strength limits beneficial impact.

The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Sahih Muslim, Book 46, Hadith 34

Scholars interpret strength broadly—one can be physically weak but spiritually strong, or financially limited but rich in beneficial knowledge.

  • What Islam says about patience

This hadith blocks the sentimental reading in which the meek sufferer is closest to God. The strong believer is called better and more beloved than the weak one, 'while there is good in both.' Patience is expected to build capacity, not consume it.
